Criteria
Who can be an Agrologist?
The basic criteria for membership in SIA is a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan or from another university recognized by the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan.
However, other degrees deemed by the Council of SIA to be equivalent to a degree in agriculture may be accepted if an applicant indicates to Council (by examination or otherwise), an adequate training in and knowledge of the agri-food industry.
In general, applicants are initially provided membership as Articling Agrologists (AAg) and permitted to practice the profession under supervision of a professional agrologist. Following the AAg period, currently a one-year period, members may apply for full membership. The articling process must be completed within three years. Failing to do so require them to reapply to become an AAg.
Registration of qualified agrologists is a major function of SIA. All applications for membership are handled through the Registrar's office. Guided by The Agrologists Act, 1994 and the SIA Bylaws, an Admissions Committee decides if applicants are accepted as Articling Agrologists or full members. In some instances, applicants will be asked to undertake further training before being admitted.
Upon completion of the articling requirements, application is made for full membership. Two written references are required in considering the application. The references must be from practicing professional agrologists.
Graduates wishing to apply to become either an articling agrologist or full members of SIA may obtain the necessary information and application form from the SIA office.
Who Can be an Agricultural Technologist?
Any individual who has graduated from an institution which is a member of the Canadian Association of Diploma in Agriculture Programs (CADAP).
The Institute recognizes the high standards of training in applied agriculture provided by the institutions who are members of CADAP. This type of training provides the background which enables Agricultural Technologists to fulfill their role in the agri-food industry in Saskatchewan.
What Are the Benefits of Becoming an Agricultural Technologist?
There are several benefits. They include:
- Membership in a professional organization. This facilitates the opportunity to network with others who work in the agri-food industry.
- Official recognition of academic training. All AT's receive a membership certificate to place on their office wall. This designates official membership in SIA.
- Increased employment opportunities. The Institute promotes the employment of AT's, by government and industry, to fill appropriate positions in the agri-food industry.
- Individual benefits. Because SIA is a member of the Agriculture Institute of Canada, there are benefits such as insurance, car rentals, accommodation rates and travel opportunities.
- Opportunity to be a member on the Provincial Council of SIA. This Council is involved in influencing agriculture and agri-food decisions at the provincial and federal levels.
- Opportunities to be involved in international programs. Each year SIA works closely to promote better agriculture and rural development programs.
